For the ThemeDev team, this opportunity came in the form of a breathtaking 3-day tour to Sylhet, a magical region tucked away in the northeastern part of Bangladesh.
From January 7th to 10th, our team embarked on an unforgettable journey filled with adventure, bonding, and the raw beauty of nature. Trust me, this tour was more than just a getaway – it was a thrilling expedition into the heart of Sylhet’s serene landscapes, ancient history, and unforgettable experiences.
The Adventure Begins: A Scenic Train Ride
Our adventure kicked off with a train journey from Dhaka to Sylhet. As the train chugged along the tracks, the landscape outside shifted from the urban sprawl to rural beauty, setting the tone for the days ahead.
Laughter, music, food, and endless conversations filled the train as we bonded like never before. There’s something about being in motion, surrounded by friends, that makes the world feel a little more connected. The journey itself was as thrilling as the destination.
Exploring the Mystical Ratargul Swamp Forest
Our first stop took us to the enchanting Ratargul Swamp Forest, one of Bangladesh’s few swamp forests.
Imagine walking inside the forest and boating through the water, surrounded by towering trees that stretch high into the sky, creating a surreal and magical atmosphere.
As we boarded small boats to navigate the water trails, it felt like we had entered another world entirely—one where time slowed, and nature’s beauty enveloped us at every turn. The lush greenery, the quietude, and the water shimmering under the sun left an indelible mark on our minds.
Bholagonj Sada Pathor: The Land of White Stones
Next, we ventured to Bholagonj Sada Pathor, a place unlike any other. Known for its vast, white-stone landscapes, this place almost felt like it belonged to a different planet. The white stones that spread out in every direction, combined with the cool breeze and panoramic views, created a mesmerizing effect.
We spent hours exploring, taking pictures, and marveling at the breathtaking beauty of this natural wonder. The landscape felt untouched by time, and every step we took was a new discovery.
Shapla Bil: A Peaceful Retreat in DB Haor
We also explored Shapla Bil (DB Haor), a serene lake surrounded by wetlands. The calmness of the water, the beauty of the blooming water lilies, and the peaceful ambiance made it an ideal spot to reflect and recharge.
It was a place where you could sit quietly, let the cool breeze wash over you, and just be in the moment. The entire team explored the place, soaking in the beauty of nature while sharing stories and creating memories.
Shahjalal Mazar: A Spiritual Journey
A visit to Shahjalal (RA) Mazar was a moment of reflection and peace. As we stood in front of the shrine, we felt a deep sense of respect for the history and spiritual significance of this place.
The serene atmosphere and the beauty of the surroundings made this visit a spiritual retreat, offering a sense of calm and perspective amidst our whirlwind tour.
Jaflong: The Land of Hills and Stones
Jaflong, with its rolling hills and rugged landscapes, provided a thrilling adventure for all of us. The tea gardens, mist-covered mountains, and stone collection activities made this a place of both tranquility and adventure.
Some of us even took the opportunity to collect stones from the riverbanks—a fun little challenge that brought out our inner explorers. We also bathed there and enjoyed some fun water activities.
If you ever visit there, buy some shawl, chocolate, and sunglasses as you will find them extremely affordable compared to other places.
Tamabil Border: The Meeting Point of Two Worlds
One of the most thrilling parts of the trip was our visit to Tamabil Border, where Bangladesh meets India. Standing at the edge of the border, we were reminded of how beautifully diverse and interconnected our world is.
The atmosphere here was vibrant, with the energy of two cultures meeting and coexisting peacefully. This visit was an eye-opener, reminding us how travel bridges the gaps between people and opens our minds to the bigger picture.
Agun Pahar: Where the Earth Speaks with Fire
Perhaps one of the most fascinating and mysterious spots we visited was Agun Pahar (Fire Hill), located near the Horipur Gas Field. This unusual and intriguing place gets its name from the natural phenomenon of gas that is bottled deep under the soil. The surrounding area is known for its spontaneous ignition of natural gas, which can sometimes be seen ablaze in hay, paper, or even tissues!
It’s an eerie yet exhilarating experience to watch small flames flickering on the ground, seemingly from nowhere. These natural gas pockets are a result of the geological activity in the region, particularly the gas reserves near the Horipur field.
We were all captivated by the flames that seemed to appear out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. The sight felt almost surreal—nature’s raw power at its finest. Agun Pahar was a reminder that the world is full of wonders that continue to leave us speechless.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST): A Touch of Knowledge
Our tour ended on an educational note with a visit to Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). As we wandered through the campus, we were inspired by the vibrant academic atmosphere.
This prestigious institution, known for its contribution to education and research, made us appreciate the power of knowledge and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
Hotel Grand Mostafa Ababil: A Comfortable Stay with Modern Amenities
Our stay in Sylhet was made even more memorable by the comfortable accommodation at Hotel Grand Mostafa Ababil, located conveniently just across from the Shahjalal Mazar.
The hotel provided a perfect blend of luxury and comfort with modern amenities, making it an ideal retreat after a day of exploration. The location itself was perfect, offering us easy access to the Mazar and other nearby attractions.
One of the highlights of our stay was the buffet breakfast, which became an event of its own. We started each day with a variety of delicious, freshly prepared options—eggs, chicken potato, khichuri, paratha, fruits, juices, and local delicacies—fueling us up for the adventures ahead. The spacious rooms and top-notch service ensured that we were well-rested and energized for the days filled with exploration. The hotel’s ambiance, coupled with its stunning location, made it the perfect place to unwind and recharge before we set out to uncover more of Sylhet’s hidden gems.
A Great Escape to Nature and Camaraderie
As we boarded the train back to Dhaka, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this unforgettable journey. From the lush greenery of Ratargul to the peaceful waters of Shapla Bil, every moment of this trip was filled with beauty and joy. But beyond the natural beauty, it was the time spent together, laughing, exploring, and creating memories, that made this tour truly special.
